The Rehab Physio Ltd.
The Rehab Physio provides advanced specialist neurological physiotherapy in the North West of England and North Wales to people with a variety of serious neurological conditions and injuries. Their physiotherapists are skilled in analysing posture, muscle tone, movement control and co-ordination.
They also focus on the patient’s interaction with the environment and offer a wide range of treatments including hands-on physiotherapy techniques as well as new technology.
Challenge
There are limited opportunities for progressive treatment techniques for patients with low level of postural control. Particularly for children and young people with CP GMFCS level 5 who are generally managed in static splints and standing frames.
Solution
They have integrated the robotic rehabilitation trainer Innowalk Pro into their clinic to allow patients with moderate to severe disabilities to access vertical, dynamic weight-bearing. For some patients this is the first time they are standing and moving!
Result
The Innowalk Pro helps to stimulate and strengthen lung and heart functions. It also aids control of muscular tone and counteracts the tendency of muscles to lose flexibility. It provides a unique way to treat children with global neurological disability in particular – generally the only alternative is to use stationary aids, which have limited potential to maintain physical health. The Innowalk Pro allows people attending the clinic to safely exercise when this was impossible before, and the team have seen strikingly better treatment outcomes. The legs can be propelled by the motor in the device and means even severe levels of disability can be accommodated. The difference in tone and flexibility after treatment with the Innowalk Pro is vastly superior compared to traditional stretching and positional aids.
Experience has shown the team that the Innowalk Pro is a valuable part of a spasticity management programme. When combined with botulinum toxin, functional electrical stimulation, and dynamic active weight bearing, it can help achieve the best results for patients with dystonic, spastic, and stiff lower limbs.
