Alma’s Journey with Cerebral Palsy – Mobility with Innowalk
6:54

Alma was born in week 32 and lives with cerebral palsy. With the help of Innowalk, she has gained the opportunity for active movement without pain – something that has made her body more relaxed and everyday life easier.

What is the Innowalk?

Innowalk is a dynamic standing and walking aid tailored to each child’s individual needs. It enables an upright standing position combined with motorised, weight-bearing movement – for the legs and, when needed, also the arms. The device is used by children with reduced mobility, such as those with cerebral palsy, to create safe and gentle movement in a standing position.

Born in week 32 – a challenging start with Cerebral Palsy

Alma is a 13-year-old girl from Hudiksvall in Sweden, who spreads warmth wherever she goes. She is the eldest of four siblings and takes that role seriously – with care, humor and a reassuring presence. At home, everyday life is full of activity, with canaries, budgies and chickens all holding a special place in Alma’s heart.

Her journey began far from Sweden. Alma was born in Syria, in the midst of war-like conditions, at 32 weeks’ gestation. The turbulent start in life – marked by stress, uncertainty and limited access to healthcare – has left its mark. She has cerebral palsy, which impacts her mobility; however, it does not diminish her enthusiasm for life or her determination.

Alma as a Child

And that is typical of Alma: she is never defined by her diagnosis, but by her personality. Her family describes her as “incredibly kind, social and a wonderful girl”. Her friends describe her as funny and caring – something she is proud of:

“I’m proud that everyone thinks I’m kind.”

From challenges to dreams of the future

Despite everyday challenges – from inaccessible environments to travelling long distances in a wheelchair – Alma always finds ways to keep moving forward. She loves visiting her grandparents in Syria and Jordan, even though the journey can be demanding. She does it with great patience, and even greater courage.

Alma also carries big dreams. She wants to become both a nurse and an author – ideally writing in two languages. Already, she writes children’s books at school, filled with imagination, warmth and hope. One of her stories was submitted to a competition and received positive feedback from a published author. That inspired her further:

“When I grow up, I want to make real books that people all over the world can read.”

Whether she is writing, spending time with her family or exploring the world, one thing always shines through: Alma’s ability to see the positive, to persevere, and to meet life with a smile.

First encounter with Innowalk – A completely new way to be active

Alma first saw Innowalk when a classmate was using it. It immediately sparked her curiosity and desire to try. When she finally had the chance, it became a clear turning point.

“It felt fun not just standing still. Not being strapped at the knees made it so much more comfortable.”

Previously, Alma had standing aids that were uncomfortable and often painful, especially when her knees had to be fixed in place. With Innowalk, this quickly changed.

She could finally stand and move without pain. The movement makes her body more relaxed, her everyday life easier – and gives her more energy for the things she loves.

How Innowalk improves mobility and reduces muscle tension

The first thing Alma noticed was how quickly her body became more relaxed when standing and moving in Innowalk. The active movement stimulates blood circulation and reduces muscle tension.

“You can feel the blood flowing into your feet. It makes everything feel better.”

Over time, her body has become more relaxed, particularly in her knees and hips. This has made everyday activities, such as using the toilet, easier.

The benefits are not only physical – Alma also notices a clear mental difference:

“Afterwards, I always feel happy and much more alert. Like other teenagers, I enjoy sleeping, but in Innowalk I always feel energised.”

Movement that brings joy and relief – not pain and worry

When using Innowalk, Alma often talks with her family or does something she enjoys. This helps her relax and get more out of the session.

For her, time in Innowalk has become something positive – not something she has to endure.

Her family also sees a clear difference. Without regular movement, Alma would quickly become tense. With Innowalk, she stays more relaxed in a way that feels natural and far more comfortable than previous treatments.

The fact that movement in Innowalk activates the entire body – including the arms – means that the benefits carry over into everyday life, every day.

Greater Control and a Sense of Independence

At first, Alma enjoyed Innowalk so much that she would stand for long periods – sometimes too long. Over time, she has learned to listen to her body and adjust both duration and speed.

“Now I know how long I should stand and how fast it should go.”

This gives her a strong sense of control and independence, allowing her to take an active role in her own therapy.

Alma’s Advice – and encouragement to other children

After experiencing both challenges and the joy of discovery with Innowalk herself, Alma would like to share a few words with other children who are about to try the same assistive device. For her, Innowalk has become more than just a piece of therapy equipment – it is an opportunity to feel stronger, more relaxed and freer in her body. And she hopes others will have the chance to experience the same.

When asked what she would like to say to a child who might feel a little nervous or unsure about trying it, she lights up and responds in her warm, straightforward way:

“It’s really good and fun – more fun than other equipment. Try it if you get the chance, and you’ll be able to feel for yourself what it’s like.”

It’s advice that reflects both Alma’s courage and her desire to inspire. She knows what it’s like to face something new, but she also knows how much it can give when you dare to try. For Alma, Innowalk has become a way to gain more movement, less pain and a better everyday life – and she hopes more children will have the opportunity to experience the same.

Her words capture her entire journey: curious, honest, and always open to new possibilities.
